Mother’s Day: A Brief History

Mother's Day Program - 1928

This is a photo of Anna Jarvis on the cover of a 1928 Mother's Day Program that would have been distributed at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Anna Jarvis founded Mother’s Day in honor of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who died on May 9, 1905. Anna Jarvis credited her inspiration for Mother’s Day as coming from hearing her mother pray after a Sunday School class on Mothers of the Bible, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it.”
